"Multi-purpose" non-standard tools

2022 02/25

Non-standard tools can be basically divided into three categories: 1. Derivatives based on standard tools; 2. Multi-purpose tools (composite tools); 3 special tools (complex non-standard). Xiangfei Xiaobian focuses on the first type of knives today.

The first type of non-standard tools can be divided into two sub-categories: the first sub-category is almost identical to the standard tools except for at least one parameter difference. For example, drills with different diameters belong to this sub-category. For these derivatives, especially for solid carbide drills, milling cutters and HSS-E (PM) thread cutting tools, the number of parameters that need to be changed is low. This is to reduce lead times, and this variant is also a typical candidate for knives.

The second subcategory is also derivatives based on standard products, but the adjustment process is more complicated. The tool not only fills the gap for the user, but also increases the productivity. For example, the user wants to machine a material that is not commonly used. Although there are suitable indexable insert types in our product catalog, they are not designed for this material. . So, we analyze the type of machining application in the field and calculate the expected stock removal rate. If the numbers are high and there is potential, then we use specialized inserts, for example with different coatings, different substrates or different cutting edge shapes.

In addition to being derived from standard knives, the second type of non-standard knives is "multi-purpose with one knife". Typical example: Drill holes in a workpiece in three stages, and each stage has a different hole diameter. This is easy to do with a standard solution: use a different drill bit each time and drill the holes one after the other. However, there will be a chamfering problem. After each level of machining, the tool must be changed, which takes a lot of time. This process is much more efficient when a "one-size-fits-all" approach is adopted. With a first-stage drill, three different diameter holes can be drilled along a set length, including two-stage chamfering-five operations, one tool.

For non-standard tools, in order to achieve the best economic benefits, it is necessary to give full play to the role of customized technical expertise and experience: the user should be more productive than using standard solutions.
