The tool life of cold extrusion processing depends on several factors, including the workpiece material, dimensional tolerances, extrusion force and the complexity of the processed shape. But generally speaking, the life of cold extrusion tools is measured by the number of working weeks, not the number of workpieces processed. This is because the workpiece material is squeezed and deformed instead of being removed, thus avoiding some common cutting problems (such as edge buildup, chipping and crescent craters). Especially when cold extrusion processing some difficult-to-machine materials (such as Inconel alloy and tantalum), compared with conventional cutting processing, tool wear is almost negligible.
There are other advantages of cold extrusion processing:
① Cold extrusion can conveniently process workpieces that are difficult to process by other methods, and can obtain high dimensional accuracy and good surface finish.
②The cold extrusion forming process rarely or will not cause waste of workpiece materials. This is especially important for some precious metal materials (such as gold and platinum).
③The processing speed of cold extrusion is fast, and its productivity can be as high as 200 pieces per minute or more.
